What Makes the Pirelli Ice Friction Different?
The Ice Friction is part of a newer generation of Nordic-style friction winter tires. Instead of relying on metal studs for ice traction, the tire combines a specialized cold-weather compound with extensive siping and a directional V-shaped tread.
Pirelli says its new compound uses vegetable oils and functionalized polymers to broaden the tire’s operating range for both ice and wet-road grip while also reducing rolling resistance.
The V-shaped tread and network of grooves are designed to move water and slush away from the contact patch, while parallel sipes, a central groove and tread-block edges provide traction and braking performance in snow. That’s particularly relevant around Calgary.
During a Chinook, the challenge isn’t necessarily getting through 20 cm of fresh snow. It’s dealing with water, slush and partially melted snow during the afternoon followed by ice when temperatures fall again. A winter tire needs to work through all of it.
How Good Is the Pirelli Ice Friction on Ice?
Pirelli makes some significant claims about the Ice Friction, but fortunately we don’t have to rely entirely on manufacturer marketing.
The tire has already undergone independent winter testing, In 2025 testing summarized by Tyre Reviews, the Ice Friction finished 2nd out of 8 tires in one Nordic friction winter tire test and 3rd out of 20 in another mixed winter tire test.
Tyre Reviews described the tire’s debut as an:
“unusually large improvement over its predecessor.”
The testing found particularly strong results in snow, dry-road performance and aquaplaning resistance while still placing the Ice Friction close to the leaders on ice. In another test, its ice grip was described as being within the performance class of good studded tires — an impressive result for a tire that doesn’t actually use studs.
That’s significant for Calgary and Airdrie drivers who want strong ice performance without accepting the additional noise and dry-pavement compromises associated with studded winter tires.
Tested in Canada — With Interesting Results
Canadian publication Auto123 also tested the Pirelli Ice Friction at the ICAR circuit in Mirabel, Quebec. Rather than simply driving around a parking lot, the test included slalom exercises, corners and emergency braking on a purpose-built winter course.
The Ice Friction was fitted to several different vehicles, including a Hyundai Elantra, Audi Q5, Nissan Rogue, Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Polestar 2. The results are worth discussing because they weren’t universally identical. Auto123 found the Elantra particularly impressive on ice, describing its grip as:
“exceptional”
and noting that the vehicle remained agile and responsive. However, the Audi Q5 struggled considerably more during the same event.That’s actually useful information. Tires don’t operate independently from the vehicle they’re installed on.
Vehicle weight, drivetrain, tire dimensions, suspension, electronic stability systems and road conditions can all influence how a winter tire behaves. Auto123 ultimately concluded that the Ice Friction offered “remarkable winter performance,” while acknowledging that effectiveness could vary depending on the vehicle.
That’s a more realistic assessment than pretending one tire will perform identically on every vehicle.
Snow, Slush and Calgary Chinooks
The Ice Friction isn’t exclusively an ice tire.
Pirelli uses parallel sipes and a central groove to improve snow traction, while the edges of the tread blocks provide additional biting surfaces for braking on packed snow. Independent testing supports those claims.
Tyre Reviews’ compilation of professional testing currently scores the Ice Friction particularly strongly for snow performance, and one 2025 test found it competitive with the best tires tested on snow.
The V-shaped directional tread also has another important job: evacuating water. That’s useful during Calgary’s frequent freeze-thaw cycles.
If you’re commuting from Airdrie into Calgary on Highway 2, for example, you could encounter packed snow near home, wet highway pavement farther south and heavy slush once temperatures rise.

A Winter Tire That Doesn’t Hate Dry Pavement
